I don't remember ever having been in a class with Ernest, but we only lived a couple of miles from each other near Silver Lake in North St. Paul. One summer Ernest got a canoe and my brother John and I spent some memorable days on the lake enjoying our friendship with him and having fun learning all about canoes. It was a great summer and like all summers during the school years it was over way too soon. I will never forget that summer and my friendship with Ernest.
