I didn't personally know Rusty, but several years ago I worked for his brother-in-law, Greg. Through Greg, I was able to collaborate with Rusty's sister, Pattianne, to create this memorial.

Harold "Rusty" Casselton

May 8, 1954 - December 30, 2007

Rusty graduated from Minnesota State University - Moorehead, earned his Master's in Speech/Communication at NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota, and took additional courses at the University of Minnesota.

He taught high school in Roseau and Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, then taught at Concordia College in Moorhead. In 2001, Rusty became director of Moorehead University’s film studies department, with 30 students in the program. Under Rusty’s leadership, the program grew to over 120 students within three years.  Many of his students went on to careers in movies and TV.

Rusty was known and respected internationally for his knowledge of old films and his work to restore and preserve them. He had a large collection of films, donated materials to archives, and participated in projects with organizations such as Eastman House, LOC, MoMA, and UCLA. A modest man, he didn’t brag about his highly-regarded work, but rather helped and encouraged others who worked in the same field.

When Rusty discovered that he had cancer, he didn’t tell many about his illness. He died sooner than anticipated, taking many by surprise. His students honored Rusty by attending the funeral wearing armbands made of film.

Rusty is survived by his wife Cindy and two daughters, Hannah and Amanda.
